The month of Ramadan is the ninth month in the Hijri calendar which has a very special position for Muslims. Ramadan is known as a holy month full of blessings, forgiveness and spiritual improvement. During this month, Muslims are required to fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from eating, drinking and anything that breaks the fast. Meaning and Purpose – Increasing Piety: Ramadan is a momentum to get closer to Allah SWT through worship, prayer and dhikr. – Soul Cleansing: Fasting is not only holding back hunger and thirst, but also practicing patience, honesty and self-control. – Social Togetherness: The tradition of breaking the fast together, sahur, and tarawih strengthens the sense of togetherness. Muslims are also encouraged to increase their alms and zakat. Main Activities – Fasting (Shaum): Refrain from things that break the fast. – Tarawih Prayers: Held every night of Ramadan. – Tadarus Al-Qur’an: Read and study the Al-Qur’an more intensively. – Almsgiving & Zakat: Helping others, especially those in need. – Special Moments: Laylat al-Qadr, a blessed night better than a thousand months. Ramadan Atmosphere Ramadan brings a different atmosphere: mosques are more crowded, Quran recitations are heard everywhere, and the spirit of sharing is strengthened. In many cultures, homes are decorated with lanterns or oil lamps, as well as unique traditions such as ngabuburit (the time spent gathering for the fasting month of Ramadan) in Indonesia.
